  1.                      VDS 3.1 Installation Guide

  3. You will need the VDS installation diskette, and a blank diskette that 
  4. matches the size of your A: drive. You cannot use drive B: since this 
  5. diskette may be needed to boot the computer in case of an emergency 
  6. that renders the hard disk inaccessible. The installation procedure is
  7. different for DOS and Windows 95 users. If you are running Windows 95,
  8. skip to the next section please.

  10. For DOS users:
  11.  
  12. You will need a clean bootable DOS diskette, preferably the original one. 
  13. You should boot your machine from this clean diskette before starting 
  14. installation. Make sure the DOS version on your hard disk matches the one 
  15. on the bootable diskette. You can find out the DOS version by typing VER at 
  16. the DOS command prompt.

  18. 1.  Put the VDS diskette in drive A:
  19.  
  20. 2.  At the DOS command prompt, type A:\INSTALL.EXE and press ENTER.
  21.  
  22. 3.  VDS installation program will offer a choice of Express or Custom setup. 
  23.     We recommend you use the Express setup. This creates the C:\VDSPRO31 
  24.     directory and keeps almost everything VDS needs in that directory. It 
  25.     also sets up shortcuts on the desktop, and arranges VDS to do its daily 
  26.     checks when you start Windows 95. Complete checks are performed once a 
  27.     day by default.

  29. 4.  After the installation is complete, INSTALL will offer to prepare an 
  30.     emergency diskette for your system. Answer YES, and put the blank 
  31.     diskette in drive A: after removing the VDS installation diskette. 
  32.     Let INSTALL format it for you.

  34. 5.  After the emergency diskette is prepared, you should remove it from 
  35.     drive A:, write protect it by opening the tab at the bottom left corner 
  36.     of the diskette, and label it VDS Emergency Diskette. If you have more 
  37.     than one computer, you should also write on the diskette the name of 
  38.     the computer or something you can remember that machine by. You MUST 
  39.     NOT use an emergency diskette prepared for one computer on another 
  40.     computer. It stores information specific to each computer that will 
  41.     not be useful in recovery of a different computer; and it could even 
  42.     cause data loss if used incorrectly in some cases.

  44. 6.  Store the emergency diskette somewhere you can find it. 
  45.     Congratulations! You are done.

  49. 1.  Put the VDS diskette in drive A:

  51. 2.  Click on the Start button located at the bottom left corner of your 
  52.     screen.
  53.  
  54. 3.  Choose Run from the menu that comes up.
  55.  
  56. 4.  In the Open: edit box, type A:\SETUP.EXE
  57.  
  58. 5.  Click on OK to start the installation.

  60. 6.  VDS Setup program will offer a choice of Express or Custom setup. 
  61.     We recommend you use the Express setup. This creates the C:\VDSPRO31

  68.     This may take a few minutes as VDS is preparing the integrity and 
  69.     recovery database for your system.

  71. 8.  Answer YES when SETUP offers to prepare an emergency diskette. Put 
  72.     the blank diskette in drive A:, and let VDS format it for you.

  74. 9.  After the emergency diskette is prepared, you should remove it from 
  75.     drive A:, write protect it by opening the tab on the bottom left corner 
  76.     of the diskette, and label it VDS Emergency Diskette. If you have more 
  77.     than one computer, you should also write on the diskette the name of 
  78.     the computer or something you can remember that machine by. You MUST NOT
